Check-engine light
Steady or intermittent warning lights, recurring codes or a light that returned after previous work.
Engine repair & diagnostics · Mesa, Arizona
When your engine runs rough, overheats, loses power or turns on the check-engine light, good repair starts with finding the actual cause.
Engine problems aren't always obvious
A warning light or stored code can identify a system that's unhappy, but it doesn't automatically identify the part that caused it. A.J. McKay's approaches engine problems by diagnosing the symptom, testing the related systems and narrowing down the cause before recommending the repair.
That matters whether you're dealing with a simple drivability issue or a deeper mechanical problem. The goal is to repair what the vehicle actually needs—not build a parts list from guesses.
When to call the shop
Steady or intermittent warning lights, recurring codes or a light that returned after previous work.
Shaking, stumbling, hesitation, poor idle or an engine that no longer runs smoothly.
Temperature climbing, coolant loss, steam, warning messages or repeated overheating.
Sluggish acceleration, reduced performance or a vehicle that struggles under load.
Oil or coolant where it shouldn't be, unusual exhaust smoke or new smells from under the hood.
Ticks, knocks, rattles or other sounds that change with engine speed or load.
A better starting point
A scan tool is useful. It gives the technician information about what the vehicle's computer has detected. But the code is often the beginning of diagnosis—not the end.
Electrical faults, vacuum leaks, cooling problems, fuel delivery, ignition issues, sensors and mechanical failures can create overlapping symptoms. Proper diagnosis helps determine which condition is the cause and which is merely the result.

Yes. The stored code is used as diagnostic information, then the related systems can be tested to determine the cause of the problem.
It depends on the symptom. If the light is flashing, the engine is running badly, overheating, losing oil or coolant, or making a serious new noise, continuing to drive can cause additional damage. Call the shop and describe what the vehicle is doing.
Yes. Overheating can involve several parts of the cooling system or the engine itself, so finding the source is important before replacing components.
The year, make and model of the vehicle, what you're experiencing, when it happens, any warning lights you see and any recent repair history you think may be related.
